The Battery Lease Trap: Why That Cheap Electric Car Could Cost You Thousands

The "Bargain" That Isn't

You’re scrolling through AutoTrader and spot a 2017 Renault Zoe for just £5,000. It seems like a steal compared to others listed at £8,000. You buy it, drive it home, and think you've grabbed a bargain.

Two weeks later, a letter arrives from RCI Financial Services. They own the battery in your car, and they want £79 a month. Forever.

What is a Battery Lease?

In the early days of EVs (2013–2018), manufacturers like Renault and Nissan tried to make cars cheaper by selling the car but renting the battery. This was known as "Battery Leased" or "i-model" (for Renault).

If you buy one of these used cars today, you do not own the battery. You are legally required to take over the monthly lease payments. If you refuse, the finance company can remotely disable the battery, turning your car into a brick.

Owned (i) vs Leased: How to Tell

This is the tricky part. Visually, a "Leased" car looks identical to an "Owned" (Battery Included) car. The V5C logbook rarely mentions the battery lease status.

Common "Lease" Models:

• Renault Zoe: Look for "i" models (e.g., "Dynamique Nav i"). If the "i" is missing, it's likely a lease.


• Nissan Leaf: "Flex" models usually indicate a battery lease.


• Smart ForTwo Electric: Often sold with "Battery Hire".

The Financial Risk

If you buy a leased-battery car by mistake:

1. Monthly Cost: You are adding £60–£100 to your monthly running costs, wiping out the fuel savings.


2. Resale Value: Leased cars are much harder to sell. Dealers often refuse to take them in part-exchange because the paperwork is a nightmare.


3. The Buyout Fee: To end the lease, you have to buy the battery from the finance company. This can cost £2,000 to £5,000 depending on the car's age.

How to Check Before You Buy

Never rely on the seller's word. Private sellers often "forget" to mention the lease, or genuinely don't realize that the lease contract doesn't just disappear when they sell the car.
